Adding Borders:
Through the centers, measure the quilt top from edge to edge in both directions. On the inner borders, mark these measurements with pins. Align pins with edges of the quilt top, match the centers and, easing any fullness, pin in place. Miter or square the corners as called for in the pattern.
Squared Borders:
Sometimes called butted borders, these are sewn first to the sides of the quilt. Trim excess border fabric even with the quilt edges at top and bottom and then add the top and bottom borders. Trim excess fabric even with the side borders.
Mitered Borders:
When joining each border to the quilt, begin and end stitches 1/4" from edge at corners. Referring to the diagrams following, fold quilt top right sides together at one corner.
Fold border/quilt seam allowances toward quilt top, match seam lines and pin in place through both layers about 3" from corner. Place straight edge of ruler along folded edge of quilt top, intersecting the final stitch in the border seam and extending through the border strip. Draw a line from the stitch to the outer edge of the border. Align long raw edges of borders and pin together along pencil line. Sew along line to edge of border, backstitch ends. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press open.
