Hand Appliqué:
On inward curves, clip the 3/16" allowances almost to the marked seam line so the pieces will lie flat. Turn under allowance and baste.

If background fabric is light in color, position it over the outline of the appliqué design. Lightly mark the major shapes with pencil or simply pin appliqués in position. If you cannot see through the background fabric, finger-crease the block in half lengthwise, crosswise, and diagonally to form guidelines for placement of the appliqués. Another solution is to tape the pattern, then the fabric to a sunlit window for tracing visibility.

Pin or baste appliqué patches on the background fabric. Appliqué with a blind stitch or invisible hemstitch in a thread color that matches the patch, not the background. Remove basting. If the background fabric shows through the appliquéd patch, carefully cut away the background fabric to within 3/16" of the seam line. If it is necessary to cut across seam lines when trimming, reinforce seams with a couple of backstitches.
