Starch & Press Appliqué:
The starch and press technique is a fast, easy way to prepare appliqué patches. Begin by making a pressing template for each appliqué pattern from tagboard the weight of manila folders. Do not include turn-under allowance. Label templates on the right sides. Place the template face down on the wrong side of the fabric and trace around it with a pencil. Cut around the patch approximately 3/16" out from the pencil line.

Pour a amount of liquid fabric starch in a bowl and dilute with half as much water. Cover a portion of your ironing board with an old towel and then a piece of muslin to absorb the extra starch. Place a patch wrong side up on the muslin and paint starch along the pencil line. Center pressing template face down on wrong side of the patch. With the side of a dry iron, gently lift the turn-under allowance up over the template. Let the patch cool. Remove the pressing template and reuse for the next patch.
