How do I chat?

It's easy to get started in our Quilters' Chat Room. Simply click the "Chat Now" link, then click the "QuiltersVillage" title in the chat list that appears. The chat room window will appear, with your guest name listed at the right. There's no need to worry about a password or registration. The Quilters' Chat Room does not require you to register or provide any personal information.

To chat with other quilters in the room, enter in your message in the text area at the bottom of the screen and click "Send". You may also send a whispered or private message to selected names. Click the name of the person you wish to send a message to view available options.

Are there rules for the chat room?

The Quilters' Chat Room is unmoderated. Although Emily and the magazine editors may be present during scheduled events, the chat rooms are not monitored on a 24 hour basis. You are welcome to stay and chat as long as you wish, but we do ask you to respect the rights of others and keep common safety sense in mind while you're visiting the chat area.

Use your own good judgement while in the chat area. Be aware that if you voluntarily disclose personal information, such as your name, email address, etc., while in the chat area, the information could be collected and used by others, and could result in unsolicited messages from other parties.

What browser do I need to chat?

You need to use a Java-enabled web browser to access the Quilters' Chat Room.

Windows users may chat using Netscape 7.0 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. Mac OSX users may use Safari or Netscape 7.

I'm having trouble connecting to the chat room using Netscape on a Mac. Why?

You need to use a Java-enabled web browser to access the Quilters' Chat Room.

There are known problems with the chat application and the Mac classic environment. You may have better success using an OSX version of the Mac system software and a java-enabled browser, such as Apple's Safari or Netscape 7 to access the chat area.

Can I chat using AOL?

You can use AOL as your internet connection, then minimize the AOL window and launch a Java-enabled browser. You can download one from http://www.netscape.com or http://www.microsoft.com.

Does this chat work with IRC? Can I use an IRC client to connect to a chat room or use the chat client to connect to IRC?

No. Even though this chat client uses simlar commands, the Quilters' Chat Room cannot be accessed via an IRC client. Similarly the chat room cannot be used to connect to an IRC client.

Does this chat client work with WebTV?

No. WebTV is not java-enabled and therefore you will be unable use this chat client. Please contact your WebTV provider for further information.

Can I block out annoying messages?

Yes. To silence annoying chatters in your room, highlight the member's nickname, and then click the "Ignore" button in the popup list that appears. Any message sent by the user will not be displayed on your screen. More than one user can be ignored in a session. To unignore a chatter, highlight the member's name, and choose "Unignore" from the popup list.

How do I send a private message?

To send a whispered message to a specific to a member, enter your message in the text area, then highlight the member's name and select "whisper" from the popup list that appears (or click the "Whisper to" button.

To have a private chat with a specific member, highlight the member's name, and select "Private Message" from the popup list that appears. A separate smaller chat window will appear where you can have a private conversation outside of the main chat room.

I am new to chat and I am not sure what all of these symbols and word abbreviations mean.

Symbols used in chat rooms are an easy, fast way to show emotion. Find out what things like ;-) or :P mean by visiting Smileys List for a complete listing. A few of the most commonly used emoticons, called Smileys, appear below the member list within the chat room. Click individual emoticons to include them in your messages.
