Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, a Primedia Publication and International Quilt Market and Festival, divisions of Quilts, Inc., commissioned the Quilting in America 2000 study. Results in this summary represent the findings of a two-phase study.
Phase I -- NFO Research, Inc.
In June 2000, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine commissioned NFO to conduct a research study to measure the number of adults in the U.S. that participate in the hobby of making quilts and to learn how much money they spend in a 12-month period.
On June 30, 2000, NFO mailed a multicard questionnaire to 40,000 U.S. households scientifically selected to be representative of all U.S. households. After four weeks in the field, 26,684 households had returned the questionnaire, representing a 67% response rate.
Phase II -- ABACUS Custom Research, Inc.
In June 2000, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine and International Quilt Market and Festival, divisions of Quilts, Inc., commissioned ABACUS to conduct an anonymous survey of American quilters. For the study, an "nth" sample of 2,500 qualified quilting consumers was selected.
On August 21, 2000, a 12-page questionnaire was mailed along with a $1 incentive. Data reported in this summary is based on 1,793 usable questionnaires that were returned after a period of six weeks in the field. This represents a 72.3% response rate.
