ASSEMBLING BUSHES
Step 1. Using a fine line permanent pen, trace the bush outline
(Page 3) onto the smooth side of a piece of lightweight, fusible interfacing
(rough side is the fusible side). Cut out the interfacing section of the
bush approximately 1/2" from lines. Place the interfacing drawing on the
selected fabric, making sure the fusible side is against the right side
of the fabric. The smooth side (with traced pattern) of the interfacing
should be on top. Pin in center of pattern piece (see Diagram 3). Do not
press with iron.
Step 2. Using an open toe sewing machine foot,
and a short stitch length, sew slightly to the outside of the drawn bush
outline. If sewn directly on the line, the finished piece will be smaller
than required. (Sewing slightly to the outside of the drawn line allows
room for turning the fabric right side out.) Trim each piece to a scant
1/4" beyond the sewn line. Clip curves, carefully slit interfacing, and
turn to right side (see Diagram 4). Gently push out curves from inside.
(Use a toothpick to help you smooth seam edges and square up corners.)
Finger press fabric seam edges. DO NOT press with iron.
Step 3. Using appropriate "house
outline drawing" as a placement guide (see Diagram 5), place
bush on assembled patchwork. Using pressing cloth, press piece to secure
it into place. Appliqué turned-under edges to quilt top.
Step 4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for each bush.
