Winter storms have left parts of the country under a thick blanket of snow. Other areas struggle against ice and bitter cold. The mere mention of an approaching weather front has folks scurrying to the closest store to stock up on "must-have" items to carry them through the storm.
While some people are clearing local grocery store shelves of milk, bread and other edibles, I have my eye on other essentials. I head to the quilt shop and fabric store to pick up several spools of thread, a few yards of backing fabric and an extra batting or two. Needles–both hand and machine–are always on the list, and if the approaching storm promises a lengthy siege, I may also grab a copy of the latest quilt-related best seller.
The shop owner always smiles at me. She knows too well the "nesting instincts" a good storm warning can trigger in a stitcher's soul. We've even joked about calling the weather service when business is slow.
Of course, the storm could always fizzle out or pass us by, but why take that chance? I pay attention to my "nesting instincts."
