A Letter from Emily  New in the Village
    Dear Quilting Friend,

I've never been a fashion guru. Even when I was younger, I was always slightly out-of-step with the latest styles. I guess I prefer comfort over haute couture.

But I have been around long enough to notice certain trends, and it seems that eventually, everything old becomes new again. Bellbottoms, hip huggers, stacked heels and psychedelic prints have all been around once or twice before. Some things just seem to cycle in and out of style.

The same can be said of certain arts and crafts. In my grandmother's day, everyone seemed to have some sort of stitching skill. Some ladies stitched garments, others made quilts, knitted, crocheted or tatted. Everyone did some sort of handwork, and each visit to Grandma's included countless hours at her kitchen table, catching up on the latest trends and techniques. If that table could talk, it would tell about beading, broomstick lace, yo-yo fabric flowers, and more.

Like certain fashion styles, stitching skills eventually fell out of favor, and for a while, handwork was shoved to the back of the closet. A whole generation forgot how to sew.

Now that quilting, sewing, knitting and other handcrafts are "cool" again, a younger crowd is starting to stitch, and are adding their own twists to "new" techniques.

Everything old is new...again.

Take good care,
Emily
