The flu bug has bitten my small town. Almost everyone I know has or has had "The Crud" as we're calling it. We commiserate over cups of hot tea laced with lemon and honey, and make kettles of chicken soup to share with neighbors and friends. Mostly, though, we retreat to our beds, sleeping away the hours until the worst of the symptoms pass.
I doze under a red and white quilt, the stipple-quilted cotton cool against my feverish skin. When I wake, I wrap up in a scrappy Streak of Lightning to ward against chills. I wonder how many of my neighbors are doing the same in their own battles against the bug.
I've heard stories of "sick" quilts in the past. These cotton cure-alls were supposedly imbued with comfort, and capable of speeding relief for a variety of ills. Most of these tall tales were dismissed as folklore long ago, and I know there may be no medical miracles in my patchwork pieces.
