At a quilt show earlier this year, I overheard an odd conversation. "Oh these," I heard a woman say, "these aren't real quilts." I turned in time to see the woman gesture toward a display of art quilts. Her companion didn't seem convinced by the woman's statement. Neither was I.
We were surrounded by beautiful, artistic creations. Some pieces showcased superb stitches, while others featured trendy techniques. Vendor booths dripped with eccentric embellishments and hard-to-find or unheard of items. The art quilt area was a treasure trove of instant inspiration. "Perhaps," I thought to myself, "she means they aren't traditional quilts."
I tend to like almost all types of quilting and fabric-flavored art. And, while there are some things I'm not personally prone to make, I can still appreciate the time and talent it takes to create a piece, whether it's a perfectly pieced patchwork bed quilt or a tiny scrap of fabric that's been stitched, stressed, stamped, painted and pushed almost beyond recognition. Each piece has it's own unique merit and worth.
