Summer is slipping into September. Temperatures have dropped, and the squirrels are scattering walnuts and acorns everywhere underfoot. It's looking a lot like an early fall, and as my mom would say, "It's time to turn the bed."
I used to roll my eyes at this seasonal exchange of sheets and mattress flipping, but now it makes a certain amount of sense. (Funny how that happens.) I'm actually looking forward to snuggling into flannel sheets and curling up under an extra quilt or two.
I came across an old family quilt as I was searching for fall flannels. The quilt, a simple nine-patch, is faded and worn, and even I can see that it's much too fragile for everyday use. I never noticed how many hand stitches had gone into constructing each delicate block, but now that I'm making quilts myself, this somehow seems more important. Now, while I'm rotary-cutting strips of fabric and chain-stitching blocks together in record time, I think of my grandmother, patiently piecing those nine-patches together with needle and thread.
