It's rare that I can spend an entire day quilting. Most of my stitching is done in stolen snippets of time and unexpected moments of availability. When these stitching opportunities arise, I try to make the most of them. Sometimes, I can jump right back in to the task at hand. Most of the time, I have to take a few minutes to figure out just where I left off.
I've noticed that working this way can be a form of mental exercise. As I pick up my piecing and re-align patches, other memories seem to fall into place. I remember pre-washing fabrics in between answering phone calls, the mid-summer thunderstorm that kept me offline and allowed me to cut squares and triangles, and that ill-fated attempt at chain-stitching with a rather insistent cat on my lap. (Not to worry––Mr. Kitty is just fine, but I have some "unsewing" ahead.)
It seems I'm stitching memories into everything I make, and those recollections remain long after the last bit of binding is applied. Every quilt has a story. What's yours?
